About the System

The OPALS Grading System is a professional opal evaluation framework co-founded in 2026 by gemologist Carmen K. M. Hui (FGA) and Dr. Andy K. H. Chan. It establishes a rigorous, quantifiable methodology to assess opal across five scientifically defined dimensions — filling a long-standing void in the gemological industry.

Each opal is evaluated across Origin Status, Play of Color, Amount of Coverage, Lucidity, and Spectrum of Color — producing a precise, reproducible grade that can be communicated clearly within the global gemological community.
